Black Community Scholarship Fund

This fund was established by the Black Community Fund Board of Directors to provide scholarship support to African-American students from the Greater Kansas City area seeking educational advancement through a college or university degree or accredited certificate program in areas and fields determined by the Black Community Fund Board of Directors.

The students eligible for assistance shall be:

  1. African-American heritage; and
  2. At the time of application, reside in the six (6) county Kansas City metropolitan area (Jackson, Platte, Clay and Cass counties in Missouri, Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas); and
  3. A graduating high school senior, a current college student, or an adult seeking educational or career advancement through an accredited degree or certification program at a two or four year college and/or nonprofit technical school.

By accepting the scholarship, the awardee agrees to perform 16 hours of community service within the year with an organization mutually approved by the student and the Black Community Fund Board of Directors. If selected to become a BCF Scholar, it is the Board’s expectation that you stay attuned to the needs of your community and are deliberate about giving back of your time, talent and treasure. Consideration will be given to the student’s academic and civic performance, community service record and essay quality.

Scholarships will be awarded on an annual basis and disbursed in two installments prior to each semester. Student must continue to attend classes regularly and maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average (or equivalent).

  1. Please write a personal statement of 500 words or less. Your personal statement should describe in detail your current professional or academic status, your future professional goals, how this education or training will assist you in attaining your goals. Include non-paid experiences that have helped shape you and your career decisions. Include any volunteer or leadership roles in which you have served and/or any special service awards or recognition you have received.
  2. I understand, if I am selected, I must perform eight (8) hours of community service per semester for one year with an organization that has been approved by the Black Community Fund Board of Directors.
  3. Submit your college letter of acceptance.
  4. May we share your application with other scholarship funders and committees outside of the scholarship opportunity stated above?
  5. Please list your spouse or partner's employer and job title, if applicable.
